NELLI - 2003 F1 Boston Photos

On March 30th, 2003, thirty-two members (and relatives) of NELLI went to F1 Boston in Braintree, MA for some serious kart racing.  The club was divided into four groups of eight and competed in 12 lap heat races to qualify for the big feature.  Each group had two qualifying heats and starting position was random for the first heat but inverted for the second. 

That made for some pretty interesting racing.  Everyone was trying hard as evidenced by an almost continuous parade of drivers that had to go to the penalty box for excessive enthusiasm.  Since this was the first time nearly everyone had been on this track, and in most cases on any race track, the driving was really excellent.  It was pretty clear that the fastest driver of the event was Paul Worcester who not only won both his heats - the second one from last starting position - but also had the fastest lap at 20.186 seconds.  That's only a second off the track record and this is the first time Paul has driven the course.  Mark Michalski was also very quick and he and Paul had some great racing.  The top three points winners from each group got to go into the 15 lap feature.  Unfortunately in the feature Paul had a penalty, apparantly for driving too fast!

After the races, the club went to the Ascari Cafe for dinner and trophy presentations.  Bud Cheney won the gold first place trophy for the feature race, and Jim Otten took the silver.  Kathy Boire was awarded the Sportsmanship trophy, also known as the "we try harder" trophy for her outstanding fourth place finish in the feature. Everyone had a super time, and several members have already asked if we can do it again soon.  We will definitely return to F1Boston for more racing, so stay tuned.  Next time we will see if we can accommodate more drivers, so don't miss out.
